The Council on Southeast Asia Studies offers a Certificate of Advanced Language Study in Vietnamese to undergraduate students in Yale College. Once requirements are completed and certified, the Certificate of Advanced Language Study is listed on student transcripts.
Students interested in obtaining the Certificate of Advanced Language Study in Vietnamese must take four (4) courses beyond L4 level (VIET 140 or VIET 142):
- At least two (2) of which must be Yale courses designated as L5 (VIET 150 and VIET 160).
- Up to two (2) non-L5 Yale courses conducted in Vietnamese and at the appropriate advanced level may be counted.
Qualifying non-L5 courses might include Independent Tutorial (VIET 470 or VIET 471) and Readings in Vietnamese (VIET 560 or VIET 570). Since Independent Tutorial courses may only be taken as Pass/Fail, only ONE Independent Tutorial course (VIET 470 or VIET 471) with Pass/Fail will be counted toward the Certificate requirement. - In addition to taking advanced level courses at Yale, students may also substitute credit-bearing academic study abroad courses taught in Vietnamese; no more than two (2) non-Yale credits can count.
- All courses must be taken for a grade (no Credit/D/Fail) and grades must be B or above, except Independent Tutorial course (VIET 470 or VIET 471) with Pass/Fail.
Interested students should contact the Southeast Asia Language Program Director, Dinny Risri Aletheiani (dinny.aletheiani@yale.edu), who acts as the certificate adviser and complete a Declaration of Candidacy for a Certificate form in this link >>.
Students should also discuss their intent to pursue a certificate and meet with Vietnamese Instructor, Quang Van (quang.van@yale.edu).
